Job Description
The Cast Technician plays a vital role in supporting orthopedic physicians and healthcare professionals in the treatment and management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The position is responsible for the application, removal, modification, and maintenance of casts, splints, braces, and other orthopedic devices to ensure optimal patient care and recovery.The Cast Technician is expected to provide patient-centered care, ensure patient safety, maintain accurate documentation, and educate patients on cast care and injury management while adhering to organizational policies and professional standards.
Patient Care:
· Apply, remove, repair, and modify casts, splints, braces, and orthopedic immobilization devices as prescribed by physicians.
· Assist physicians during fracture reduction procedures and orthopedic treatments.
· Prepare patients for casting procedures and ensure proper positioning and comfort
· Assess circulation, sensation, and movement before and after cast application.
· Monitor patients for signs of complications related to casting or splinting.
· Perform wound dressing changes associated with orthopedic treatment as directed.
· Ensure patient privacy and dignity throughout all procedures.
Patient Education and Support:
- Assesses patient educational and needs and interacts educate patients and families regarding cast care, splint maintenance, and activity restrictions.
- Provide instructions on recognizing signs of complications such as swelling, pain, skin breakdown, or circulation issues.
- Reinforce physician treatment plans and follow-up requirements.
- Answer patient questions regarding orthopedic devices and recovery expectations.
- Provide emotional support to patients experiencing injury-related anxiety or discomfort
Collaboration and Communication:
· Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons, physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals.
· Communicate relevant patient observations and concerns promptly.
· Coordinate patient flow to ensure efficient clinic operation
· Assist in facilitating referrals and follow-up appointments as appropriate.
· Participate in multidisciplinary discussions regarding patient care.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Accurately document casting procedures, patient assessments, interventions, and follow-up instructions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Record materials used and any complications or concerns observed during treatment.
- Maintain complete and timely patient records.
- Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and regulatory documentation standards.
- Always maintain patient confidentiality.
Safety and Infection Control:
- Prepare and maintain casting materials, supplies, and orthopedic equipment.
- Ensure casting equipment is clean, functional, and properly stored.
- Follow infection prevention and control standards during all procedures.
- Identify and report defective equipment and environmental hazards.
- Adhere to workplace safety policies and emergency procedures
- Maintain adequate stock levels of casting materials and supplies
Professional Development:
- Maintain competency in casting techniques, orthopedic procedures, and patient care practices
- Participate in training programs, workshops, and continuing professional development activities.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and departmental audits.
- Contribute to patient safety and service excellence programs.
- Assist the Head Nurse and orthopedic team with additional duties within the scope of practice.
- Maintain current certifications required for the role
Quality Improvement and Compliance:
- Ensure compliance: Adhere to all relevant regulations, protocols, and safety standards to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to patient complaints and concerns. Initiates the nursing of administrative chain of command if unable to resolve patient issues
- Assists the Head Nurse of the unit by willing acceptance of any other work-related responsibility.
- Other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the job.
Skills
· Diploma in Cast Technology, Orthopedic Technology, Healthcare Sciences, or related field.
· Certification as a Cast Technician or Orthopedic Technician preferred.
· Minimum 2 years of experience in orthopedic, trauma, emergency, or outpatient orthopedic settings preferred.
· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
· Knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy, fractures, and orthopedic conditions.
· Proficiency in applying and removing various types of casts, splints, braces, and orthopedic devices.
· Knowledge of fracture management principles and immobilization techniques.
· Familiarity with orthopedic clinic workflows and patient care processes.
· Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices.
· Ability to assess neurovascular status and identify casting complications.
· Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
· Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
· Effective communication and patient education skills.
· Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
· Service-oriented mindset with strong interpersonal skills.
· Ability to stand for extended periods during procedures.
· Ability to assist with patient positioning and handling orthopedic equipment.
· May require flexibility in scheduling to accommodate clinic operational needs.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced outpatient and orthopedic clinical environment.
