Role Purpose:

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for performing a comprehensive range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations in support of the Radiology Department's clinical imaging services. The role encompasses the independent acquisition of high-quality sonographic images across multiple anatomical regions, active support of the radiologist during interventional and special ultrasound procedures, and the delivery of a safe, patient-centered examination experience. The Sonographer operates with a high degree of technical proficiency and clinical judgment while upholding institutional standards of quality, safety, and professional conduct.

1-Diagnostic Ultrasound Examination:

  • Perform a broad spectrum of diagnostic ultrasound examinations, including abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, and breast ultrasonography, in accordance with departmental protocols and referring physician requests.

  • Verify patient identity and confirm the anatomical site and clinical indication for each examination prior to commencement, in strict compliance with patient safety and identification protocols.

  • Explain the examination procedure clearly and comprehensively to the patient, providing instructions for appropriate physical positioning to optimize diagnostic image acquisition.

  • Select the most clinically appropriate transducer and systematically adjust equipment controls — including frequency, gain, depth, and focal zone settings — for each specific organ and clinical indication.

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to incidental or unexpected sonographic findings, escalating clinically significant observations to the supervising radiologist without delay.

  • Contact the supervising radiologist for immediate consultation during examinations presenting with diagnostic complexity or clinical ambiguity.

2-Image Management and Documentation:

  • Record all acquired sonographic images directly on the ultrasound system and transfer completed studies to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Enter complete and accurate patient demographic and clinical information into the ultrasound system at the time of the examination to ensure the integrity of the imaging record.

  • Document all relevant examination details — including clinical indication, scanning technique, and any procedural notes — in the departmental logbook and the electronic health record (EHR) in compliance with institutional standards.

  • Submit finalized image sets to the radiologist promptly for review, discussion, and formal reporting.

  • Ensure all imaging documentation is completed, filed, and stored in accordance with departmental data management and medical records retention policies.

3-Equipment Operation and Workspace Management:

  • Conduct pre-operational checks and routine functional assessments of ultrasound equipment at the commencement of each working shift, reporting any identified faults or performance anomalies to the appropriate technical or biomedical engineering team without delay.

  • Ensure all ultrasound transducers, probes, and ancillary equipment are properly cleaned, disinfected, and stored in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and infection prevention and control standards.

  • Maintain ultrasound examination rooms in a consistently clean, organized, and fully stocked condition, ensuring all consumables and required materials are available and within their expiry date.

  • Manage the stocking and replenishment of examination room supplies, initiating procurement requests as required.

  • Adhere to all manufacturer guidelines and departmental policies regarding the safe and appropriate operation of ultrasound equipment.

4-Patient Care, Education and Safety:

  • Deliver a professional, empathetic, and patient-centered experience throughout the entirety of each examination, ensuring patients and their families feel informed, respected, and at ease.

  • Provide clear and accessible explanations of ultrasound procedures, addressing patient questions and concerns prior to and during the examination with sensitivity and cultural awareness.

  • Provide patient education regarding examination preparation, procedure expectations, and post-procedure instructions within scope of practice

  • Recognize and promptly escalate any deterioration in patient condition or expressions of clinical concern to the supervising radiologist or nursing team.

  • Comply with all hospital emergency response procedures and protocols, ensuring preparedness to act appropriately in clinical emergency situations arising within the ultrasound department.

5-Professional Standards, Compliance and Continuous Improvement:

  • Maintain active and current registration and licensure with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) and fulfil all requirements for ongoing professional certification renewal.

  • Engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and complete all mandatory institutional education and competency requirements at least one month prior to expiration.

  • Uphold Bupa Person-Centered care values, code of conduct, ethical standards, and all applicable institutional policies and procedures in all aspects of professional practice.

  • Actively contribute to departmental quality improvement initiatives, clinical audit activities, and patient safety programs within the scope of the role.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient and organizational data accessed during the course of employment and comply fully with institutional cybersecurity policies and awareness programs.

  • Adhere to all relevant safety protocols and proactively identify and report any job-related safety concerns through the appropriate institutional channels.
